Was expecting letter soon.......it arrived today. Less than a week notice I'm off for pre op checks/assessment. Which means my knee replacement is soon (or sooner than I would wish) Many of you go through more or the same - hats off to you all. Inside me I'm wobble wobble jelly and worried - we are all different I know. X

Oh Jane.....be brave.....I know you can be and you will.
Suppose it's catch 22 here. If you had to wait for a long time for the appointment the waiting would be bad, but now it's thrust on you so quickly it's a bit of a panic.
Just think the sooner the better and you will be well on the way to recovery for when the sunshine arrives.
Good Luck!!!
Paula x

Thankyou Paula You are right, sooner the better. Rheumy rung me up just now to say that they can squeeze me in for steriod injection inbetween the assessment & pre op appointments - silver cloud ! Rheumy nurse said no problems have steriod injection because I haven't got a date for the op. Shall try to be positive. Xxx Lovely to read you have had an active holiday Paula

Best wishes Jane. I would feel the same as you...but you have to be brave and rise to this challenge. Think of how much easier life will be when you've recovered from the surgery. Keep us posted on op dates etc. Good luck from me xxx

hi Jane
It's only natural to feel really scared and jittery before any operation. i have had over 6 major replacement operations in the last 10 years and I still feel wobbly before an op. I always try and replace those thoughts with positive ones which always gives me strength and focus on how much better you will feel after all the surgery is over. Knee replacements are challenging but you will be ok, and the pain relief is enormous once you have got rid of your manky old knee. I would be completely bed bound without all the replacements I have had done, thank goodness we live in an age of life changing surgery.
Keep positive Jane, the waiting leading up to surgery is always the worst part.
Love Rebecca

Hope the pre-op chat goes ok and puts your mind at rest a bit.
I seem to be collecting an awful lot of metal. I had both my hips replaced in 2003 when I was 33, finger and right hand ops 2006/2007, right knee replaced 2008, got married in between, then had left knee replaced 2009, I was due to have my elbow replaced last year but just kept getting lung infections. Also need shoulder surgery but that will have to wait. Basically Exeter hospital are slowly rebuilding me, just need to see the foot specialist next and I have the full collection of surgeons!!!
Best wishes Rebecca

I think its wonderful what technology can do - you have inspired me not to be a wimp! Thank you everyone for your support - I will do a new post. Xxx

UPDATE: Got to hospital early for parking (let the battle comence for limited disabled) Found where to go.........first task was a urine sample in pot, I hope I don't offend but it goes down hill from now! I said I had difficulty performing the aim for the needle in the haystack so kind young man gave me a pot like an old mouse tub without a spout to do the tinkle in then pour into the said wee bottle. Sadly I failed!!!! I had spilt it on my tights etc.... had nowhere to put the pot, knocked it on floor a bit . Had to then tidy myself up and the floor, then use a small sink away from the spillage area to empty what was left into the bottle. Arthritic fingers let me down, next time I shall ask for a bucket Had ecg/weigh/blood. Into another room: saw nurse who made notes of past operations/medication (brownie points for taking repeat form so I didn't fluff the written form up. BIG shock time: nurse - ooohhh how exciting you have your date - me: oooohh when? Nurse: TUESDAY 29th JANUARY. Me: I was told its 3 week notice from the hospital. Nurse: well your just lucky. I need time to sort shifts out with my hubby and time off with him for childcare - I'm not able to cancel/ask for a date until a letter offering next Tuesday appointment comes through. Also, I have my hair booked in in a few weeks for colour!! Topping up the blonde! Got to look my best! I need to wait till next week for payday so I can buy some nighties in long so I don't flash my knees off! Ushered into a room to meet with occup therapy: they will come round to see what bits I need around the home after op. Had slide show with elderly ladies of what is involved/dvt/eat iron food/infection/zimmer frames/feel a metal knee joint (heavy). Had more knee xrays. Lots of to n fro with nurse and surgeon (didn't meet him) on if I can go to rheumy next for my pre arranged steriod jab - because I'm not agreeing to next week op - I could have my steriod jab (yepppiieee). Had busy day. Thanku for reading xxx

Glad you've had all the pre ops done , hope the steroid jab works wonders Sophie x

Oh Jane! How could I have missed your adventures I laughed out loud about dropping your pee pot on the tights Lol That's a technique I often use Normally in tiny cubicle When you bash your head on the door bending over trying to sort yourself Having decided the tights are unredeemable You try to take them off Trying to lift the trousers over things You lean your bum against one wall Knee won't work so propping that against the lavy you wiggle the trousers on Feeling pleased with yourself You turn to leave Realise with horror that when you bopped your head against the door The opening process had begun and an inquisitive 4 yr old is watching your amazing acrobatics Lol Oh Jane The indignity! how to be a velvet bulldoser

It must have been quite a shock at first, but it will be good to have it all over before the Summer. Just think what a great time you can now look forward to enjoying with your little girl. Good luck, Zena xx Ps what fun these hospital visits are you did make me smile Sounds as though Jenni is well aquainted with them too!!!

Jenni, I'm glad someone else has endured the urine sample mayhem! I've thought about going to get a cheap jug to take in!! Or an old icecream container!! Got someone from occ therapy or similar to that coming out on my day off Thursday to measure up and order the products required for after op. I don't want main bathroom touching because I want normality for my daughter. No 2nd date as yet - however it needs to be after 14th Feb but not for valentines day, for my half a head colours and trim! Got to get pampered first! ordered new pair of crocs for taking in - my daughter chose purple! Bought long nities from m&s buy one get one half price. Still worried though. Concerened its a mixed ward.....says online men wash and sleep away from ladies?! My hubby says arthur or fred won't be in any state to flirt with me, did make me chuckle! Thanku for your kind words. Xxx

Just caught up with recent news and had a laugh at yours and Jennie's post about peeing into a pot, there are times when I wish I was a man and all of these are about either standing up to have a wee or not having to queue like us ladies have to. I've got visions of you now sitting in a hospital bed with a button up to the chin flannelet nightdresses, bed jacket and cap on....(all colour coordinated of cause). Wishing you luck when things get the go ahead. Love Paula x
